WHAT IS Cycle Seen?

Cycle Seen is an exhibition celebrating the diverse and dynamic culture of cycling/cyclists in Portland, Oregon. The exhibition will take place in June 2008, throughout metro Portland. Some Cycle Seen events such as rides to gallery locations will occur during Pedal Palooza, Portland’s bike fun festival.

Cycle Seen is currently seeking submissions for a juried exhibition. Portland area Photographers and Artists are invited to submit up to 10 images for consideration. We are interested in showcasing work that addresses the theme of Portland’s diverse bike culture. Work in all two-dimensional media is eligible for consideration.

What we are looking for:
We are looking for photographs and graphics related to cycling and cycling culture in metro PDX from the past two years.

We are looking for images of:

Bikes! (Yes, tall, mini, recumbent, road, mt, commuter, chopper, tandem, trailer, custom, etc… ) people on all types of bikes seen in Portland, pictures from bikes, wild outfits and customs & bikes, fun and extreme rides, bikes + traffic, bike signage, families on bikes, bikes errands, bike races, riding in the rain, hidden rides, bike safety, bike mechanics, bike builders, bike building, bike shops, bike messengers, bike crafts, bike hauling, moving by bike, bike teams, portraits of bikes culture, self-portraits w/ bikes, bike performances, bike events, bike stickers, bike gear, bike socks, bike games, bike homes, bike business, bike and coffee, bike & eating, bike education, community bike programs, and all bike related stuff you know about in PDX…


Portland Area artists (Yes, this includes Vancouver, WA) are invited to submit up to 10 images of recent work (artwork created in 2006 until present) that fits the exhibition theme: a celebration of the diverse bike culture of Portland, Oregon.
Submission will be limited to two-dimensional work. We welcome a variety of medium (photography, digital, illustration, collage, mix media, painting), however we are particularly interested in photographic and illustrative work. There are no restrictions on size.

Submission guidelines must be followed without exception.

No Calls. No Email Submissions. No discs. NO actual work for the jury process. Submissions must be uploaded digitally through flickr:
Up to 10 images will be considered for the exhibition. Images must be in jpeg format. Posted to the Cycle Seen Group on flickr.

Sign up for a free flickr account
Upload your photos to your flickr account
Follow the flickr upload instructions online. Note: Cycle Seen does not have an image size limitation; however free flickr accounts are limited to 5MB uploads. Free flickr accounts also have a monthly limit and we therefore recommend spacing out your uploads monthly if you are using large files. A large upload may limit your posting to 3-5 images per month.
Label your photos as follows:
Title Field – your name, title of work, and submission#(1,2,3…10)

Note Field – Medium, dimensions (framed), year, retail price, yes/no BTR**

To add a photo to the group, select the photo in your account you will see options for adding the photo to the group directly above the photo.
Please DO NOT submit more than 10 images.
We will be contacting you through your flickr mail account, so please check that account.
Submissions: Must be posted by March 1, 2008 at Mid-night
Extended Deadlin— Must be posted by March 8, 2008 at Mid-night
Notification: Artists accepted will be notified by April 15, 2008


March 1 — Submissions due online flickr (mid-night)

May 1 — Artists participation confirmed
May 28 – June 3 — Work hand delivered to exhibition sites
June – throughout the month – Receptions & Organized Rides
June – End of month — Exhibition closes
June 28 – July 3 — Artists pick up work from exhibition sites

Note: each specific site will have precise pick-up and drop-off times TBD.

Delivery and Insurance

Each accepted work must be hand delivered to the site by date and time specified in the artists contract (received upon acceptance into the show). All work needs to be picked-up on designated date we do not have storage space for work. All work must be ready to hang or be framed with proper hanging device included. If work is framed, Plexiglas must be used instead of glass (for safety reasons). The artists are responsible for insuring their own work. Cycle Seen will not be responsible for loss or damage to work. Sorry, we cannot accommodate early drop off or shipping of work. Work must be dropped off at the at the exhibition site during the drop off times and date.

Sales and Copyright

Your entry grants permission for the use of images on promotional materials for Cycle Seen 2008. To defray our costs Cycle Seen asks artists for 5% commission on all works sold during the exhibition. Some venues have % commission policy while others will not. You will be informed in your acceptance letter of which venue your work will be shown and their policy.

**We are partnering with Bikes to Rwanda (BTR) . Selected works will be sold with 50% to benefit BTR. Please indicate if you want or do not want your work to be considered for the benefit auction.
